There’s too many high-noise feeds with sporadic great content out there to read them all. I use GitHub and Dropbox to keep all my projects off my computer and accessible. I like to keep everything I can online and off my computer, so along with Hiveminder and SimpleNote, I use Gmail for both home and work email, Delicious for bookmarking and making groups of links, and Instapaper for things to read on the can or while waiting in line.I keep them in sync with a Perl script, so I have my notes everywhere. Notational Velocity’s a great super-fast note taking application for OS X, and SimpleNote’s the same for the iPhone. My favorite parts are the command-line client and IM interface. There’s a reason it’s so beloved in the Mac development community. Max, the project head, is great about accepting patches. I used MacPorts for a long time, and was a big proponent, but the ease of adding new packages to this won me over quickly. It’s what I use on my servers, and I like to develop in a similar environment. The ICEkey is my favorite keyboard I’ve ever used. I have the same setup at work and at home. Upon playback, those reference points are used to 'repro' the original as closely as possible using whatever info the compressor decided to leave there for the decompressor to understand. I'm not going to fully explain how compressions works, but think of it as follows : when applying compression you are going to tell the original file to throw away big chunks of information and replace that by much smaller reference point or low rez 'images' of that original. Even if it will not appear obvious to the naked ear, it is a build up of your audio having to go through a variety of processing and just like any digital processing, you need proper resolutions to ensure that what comes out on the other end is as high quality as possible.įormats like mp3 are compressed formats. Make sure you experiment a bit with mic placement and if at all possible choice of mics as well when recording that guitar. great starting point to cover that part of the recording process. Now that said : The 5% is important of course but we need to put things in perspective. it will only count for 5 % of you actually being able to convince the listener to like your recording. the other 5 % would include the entire process of recording > choice of gear > format > etc etc. I'll start with my first and primary rule for a great recording : to get the most out of it, it is important that along the way you do try to pick up on some general knowledge concerning all of this as well. Your starting point is good : You are inquiring about getting the quality of your recordings up to a higher level.Īnd you have chosen Avid products to hel you achieve that which is even better :-)īut in order to benefit from setting out on that journey.
